IFS THERAPY
We all grow up a part of a system built with parents, caregivers, teachers, siblings, frineds and the list goes on. Each person in the system has unique qualities, characteristics and plays a role in how the system functions, sometimes even taking on roles that they don’t want. How those roles are expressed is largly dependent on the environment and the relationships people in the system have.
Just like this system, we all have an inner system that works very simalarly. We often aren’t aware of our inner systems becuase it mostly operates without our help. However, when we experience an overwhelming life experiences parts of us will take on extreme qualities, characteristics and roles to help bring it back into function.
To an inner system function doesn’t always mean peaceful, It just means it can keep running. When our inner system works to bring us back into function after an overwhelming life experience we may know the system has changed (maybe in an unhelpful way) because we are more anxious, burnt-out, depressed or overwhlmed. These parts may need our help to not just find function but to find support and inner peace.
A lot of us have tried traditional talk therapy where the focus is on thinking and talking to the therapist about your problems but still never quite landing on feeling inner resolve. That’s because most talk therapies are supportive of skill building and problem solving but not so much on relational repair. If you take a look at the problems you’ve brought to therapy I bet each of them involed an interaction with someone else. If we hurt in relationship then that just may be where we will find our deepest resolve. I believe if we really want to help our parts we have to learn how to be with them not just tell then what to do. IFS therapy is focused on connecting and repairing the relationship you share with each part in the system.
